Ghost Recon: Breakpoint did not launch to critical acclaim as Ubisoft may have hoped but since the official release, the development team behind the game have been working constantly to bring many improvements and missing features to try and make the game as best as it can be for the fans of the franchise.

At launch, Ghost Recon Breakpoint received mixed reviews. The acting of Jon Bernthal was praised almost unanimously, but the gameplay, multiplayer, lack of ally AIs, and more were criticized by many. Perhaps the best way to describe the gameplay is a broken marriage between a Tactical Shooter and a Looter Shooter, as the former genre has fallen to the wayside in recent years.

Nonetheless, Ubisoft kept at it. Ghost Recon Breakpoint is a much different game in 2021 than it was in 2019, and while it may not have a No Man's Sky-level revival, its fanbase or those who wish to dip their toes in have been treated kindly by Ubisoft. In fact, the company's most recent roadmap shows a lot of promise, yet it might not quite be enough.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint DLC 2021

At the end of Spring, the Teammate Experience Update will release. This improves upon the AI allies in Ghost Recon Breakpoint, improving their overall quality and introducing some new features for them to boot. For single-player fans of the franchise, this is a great addition; for those who prefer the game with a squad of friends, at least the option is there. Then, to celebrate Tomb Raider's anniversary, there's an Easter Egg treasure hunt slated for the game, but nothing concrete was discussed about it.

Episode 2: Deep State

This fall, the next Operation will come to Ghost Recon Breakpoint, with Ubisoft promising it to be the biggest yet. Given the success of Greenstone, Deep State, Red Patriot, and Amber Sky, this is big news for fans. It'll be interesting to see exactly what this Operation entails, but it's the lake at the end of the river. It's the big promise at the end, but overall, it's a promise.

The Future of Ghost Recon Breakpoint

Games that make big revivals need constant updates; No Man's Sky frequent updates is proof of that. The problem is, however, it seems Ghost Recon Breakpoint is slowing down. What it does offer is great, but it's very little. That seemingly signals that the end is in sight, especially when considering the variety of Ubisoft games currently in the pipeline. It's a huge company, but even with all of its studios, there's only so much it can do. This DLC is proof of that slowing down vibe, because as aforementioned, each has its own caveats.

The AI update is great for those who love the teammates, but it's something many argue comes across as too little, too late. The AI weren't there day one, and their inclusion was solid. This is just an improvement on that, and among the active fan base, it's mostly directed to SP lovers. The Tomb Raider Easter Egg, at the same time, could be something big or it could be something small. Without concrete details, even if it arrives later this year, it's not necessarily a big draw for every one playing Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint True Grit

And, once again, the new operation is the big promise, but that promise comes with a wait. True enough, Fall 2021 may not look as sharp as most years due to the COVID pandemic, but if not timed right, this new DLC could be competing with shooters like the new Call of Duty, Battlefield 6, or Halo. That doesn't even factor in other games that could release this fall.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint System Requirements

At the end of the day, it looks like a short-term goal stylized as a long-term plan. That's not a bad thing, but it's easy enough to see this as the final chapter of Ghost Recon Breakpoint. Hopefully, the game serves as a lesson for the next game, and it doesn't have to go through all of the same loops.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.

Ghost Recon is a series of games that has become the pinnacle of third-person tactical shooters. Fans eagerly await each new entry so they can traverse across open maps on foot or in a myriad of vehicles, military or otherwise. If the name doesn't give it away, Ghost Recon games also place a heavy emphasis on scoping out the terrain and then using strategy and stealth to take out enemies before they even know what hits them. Ubisoft has had plenty of time to master it, with the original Ghost Recon's 20 year anniversary coming up later this year. So how does the latest entry, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, honor its predecessor's legacy in time for the franchise to reach its 20th birthday?

When Ghost Recon Breakpointwas first announced at E3 2019 by Ubisoft, fans pretty much knew what to expect. The game was expected to be a new and improved version of Ubisoft's 2017 Ghost Recon: Wildlands, with a larger looting system like that in the Destiny series. Like Wildlands, Ghost Recon Breakpoint's open world sandbox added an extra level of strategic variety, most of the time in a way that players have no way of planning for. However, many felt the game suffered from an identity problem, oftentimes feeling like a game belonging to multiple genres but not really being a master at any of them. Now, is it worth playing in 2021?

A Breaking Point

Ultimately, it seems that Ghost Recon Breakpoint does what it sets out to do. It lets players loose to stealth or slam their way through the game map while they find better gear that bolsters their defense. The stealth and tactical elements in Breakpoint are fun, but the game itself has much more than just stealth missions and focuses too little on those other experiences. The story is the same old 'could they, should they?' of scary sci-fi technology and robots that's been used from Terminator to Black Mirror, with just as much star power, as Jon Bernthal plays a leading role. However, even that wasn't enough to save the title from mixed to negative reviews from critics.

On paper, this game probably looked amazing. Ubisoft has clearly learned some lessons from Wildlands and applied them to this game, as Ghost Recon Breakpoint feels like its natural successor. Unfortunately, that means that the fetch missions and simple neighborhood takeovers have been brought over in the sequel as well, in no small amount. Some new features have also drawn ire from fans, with the gear score based looting system standing out specifically. The backlash has been so real, that Ubisoft announced it would be making changes to Ghost Recon Breakpoint from the gunsmith mode to the looting system last year.

Multiplayer Potential

If there is one thing that the last two Ghost Recon titles do well, it's the multiplayer. Letting players traverse the open world and strategically take down baddies by working together to coordinate in real time is extremely satisfying. This mechanic provides more than enough fun to get through the campaign if players can find someone to play with. That being said, this game could also be just as fun for those who would rather play by themselves, but the quality of story and mission content doesn't provide that level of immersion. Apparently, Ubisoft recognizes that single players are missing out, as it has added AI teammates to Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint Crossplay

Any gaming franchise that has lasted as long as Ghost Recon has deserves some recognition, to be sure. 20 years and on near as many platforms, Ghost Recon has told some harrowing stories while also encouraging players to develop more strategic mindsets. Ubisoft has clearly been putting in the work to show its commitment to updating Ghost Recon Breakpoint, with new content releasing through 2021. Breakpoint is surely no exception to the legacy of great tactical shooters that came before it, improving on past entries' mechanics to deliver a title that many fans will remember for years to come, despite the hiccups along the way. In short, it's at least worth trying out and perhaps those updates will give players a renewed vision of the game.
