The Epistle of James is the first in a group of epistles customarily called General Epistles, which includes James, 1 and 2 Peter, 1, 2, and 3 John, and Jude. They are designated as general or “catholic” epistles in the sense that they are universal, not being addressed to any particular individual or church, but to the church as a whole. The book is well suited for public reading in worship and is remarkable in its parallels with the Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5-7; see chart, “The Parallels and Possible Allusions of James to the Sermon on the Mount”). James, being a “country boy” from Galilee, also has numerous references to “nature.”. From the first organization of the church at Jerusalem James appears as its head. Paul, for example, reported to James and Peter at Jerusalem (Galatians 1:18, 19). James was not an Apostle. He took the leading part in the council at Jerusalem, and was highly respected by the whole Church (Acts 15:13). The NT mentions three men by the name of James. James also played an important role in the conference at Jerusalem (Ac 15:13-33), and Paul brought him greetings upon arriving at Jerusalem (Ac 21:18-19). 'James, the Lord's brother' (Ga 1:19) is most likely the author of this epistle. Tradition describes James as a man of prayer, which may explain the emphasis on prayer in his letter.
